Pirates, Peter Pan, Captain Hook And Tinker Bell

Perhaps the most memorable pirate in the world of children's literature is Captain James Hook. Created by Scottish novelist and playwright, J.M. Barrie, he is the villain and leader of the pirates in the novel, Peter Pan.

Captain Hook resides on his pirate ship, the Jolly Roger, stationed on the magical island of Neverland. Neverland is inhabited by various characters including Indians, mermaids, fairies, pirates and boys who have the ability to fly. It also is an island in which children never grow into adults.

Hook is the nemesis of Peter Pan, the adolescent hero in Barrie's story and the leader of the Lost Boys. One of the major reasons for Hook's animosity stems from the time Peter cut off Captain Hook's right hand. As a result, the pirate captain wears an iron hook as a replacement for his lost hand.

To add insult to injury, Peter Pan fed Hook's severed hand to a crocodile. Enjoying his sample, the crocodile spends the remainder of the story shadowing Hook in hopes of finishing his meal. Lucky for Hook, the crocodile also swallowed a clock, whose constant ticking alerts the pirate captain of his presence.

Hook is characterized as an intelligent and ruthless pirate. He is reputed to have been Blackbeard's bosun, or petty officer, and also to have been the only man feared by Long John Silver. He is a master storyteller as well as an accomplished musician. The stories make allusions to his past, where he is rumored to have attended the prestigious English College of Eaton.

Hook leads his ship's crew into numerous skirmishes with Peter Pan and the Lost Boys. In the novel, Hook kidnaps Wendy, Peter Pan's romantic interest and the Lost Boys surrogate mother. He further incites Peter Pan when he plants a bomb within the confines of his hideout and injuries his best friend, the fairy Tinker Bell.

Hook's actions result in a final showdown against Peter Pan. Peter and the Lost Boys attack the Jolly Roger in order to rescue Wendy and her brothers from walking the plank. Peter then duels Hook, kicking him overboard where he is swallowed by the ticking crocodile.

Many productions of Peter Pan have been made. Originally released in 1911, J.M. Barrie's beloved story has long been considered a classic and has transcended many mediums, including theater, film and animation. Notable film versions include Steven Spielberg's Hook, P.J. Hogan's Peter Pan and the animated Disney feature film Peter Pan.
