The Pirates Of The Caribbean 2: Dead Man’s Chest

Johnny Depp is back as Captain Jack Sparrow for more swordplay, swash-buckling, sailing and rum in the second installment of the pirate trilogy, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, yo-ho!

Returning with Depp are Orlando Bloom as the blacksmith turned deckhand Will Turner and his bride-to-be Elizabeth Swann played by Keira Knightley. Gore Verbinski returns as director of the theme ride to film franchise blockbuster.

Picking up where Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl left off, Turner and Swann are set to marry, until the intervention of Lord Cutler Beckett (John Hollander) who throws the two into jail for aiding in the escape of Jack Sparrow. Of course, their arrest has ulterior motives for Beckett and he offers them a pardon if they can locate Sparrow and his magical compass. Turner sets out to find Sparrow while Swann disguises herself as a male pirate and becomes a stowaway to follow Turner across the Caribbean.

We meet up with Jack Sparrow as a captor of a cannibalistic tribe who mistakes him for a god and is slated to offer him as a sacrifice. Narrowly escaping imminent death, Sparrow finds himself in more perilous waters when the ultra CGI'd squid-faced Davy Jones, played by Bill Nighy and his crew of undead Flying Dutchmen surface in search of Sparrow for a debt owed; a debt of his soul.

To escape Jones and the debt, as well as the immense sea monster the Kraken controlled by the crew, Sparrow enlists the help of a witch woman played by Naomie Harris, who advises him to find the dead man's chest containing the still beating heart of Davy Jones. With the heart, Sparrow would be in control of Jones and his amphibious crew. And so the story goes.

Filled with numerous subplots (including an introduction to Will's father Bootstrap Bill Turner, played by Stellan Skarsgard, who is doomed to an afterlife working in Jones' crew), intricately choreographed swordplay and dazzling CGI effects, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest packs nonstop action into the two hour and 30 min runtime.

Reviews were mixed for Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest. Chicago Sun Times reviewer Bill Zwecker writes the second film is pretty much all thrills, special effects and nonstop action–but with virtually no cohesive or compelling story line. On the other hand, Rolling Stone reviewer Peter Travers lauds Depp's performance saying the triumphant rogue in Depp keeps this pirate ship afloat, and actually makes the third voyage (coming next summer) a trip worth booking.

Regardless of the disparity of reviews, the film was not affected during the opening weekend grossing $135 million in its first weekend. It remained the number one movie for three weeks thereafter.

The end of the movies leaves us anticipating the release of the final film in the trilogy Pirates of the Caribbean: At Worlds End slated for release in summer 2007 with an appearance by Depp's inspiration for Jack Sparrow, Keith Richards as the father of the fabled pirate.

The DVD for Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest will be released December 4, 2006.
